As Oscar Hemming joins the Blue Jackets, a cross-conference sibling rivalry ignites. The Finnish standout now trails his brother Emil’s professional footsteps toward a potential NHL showdown.

On Friday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected Oscar Hemming 14th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday, meaning the younger Hemming brother will follow a path into the NHL pipeline carved out by his older brother Emil, whom the Dallas Stars selected 29th overall just a round later.

For Emil, watching Oscar get called to the stage had to be a proud moment. The Stars top prospect has been working his way through the system himself, and now the two brothers are set on a course that could one day put them on opposite sides of the ice.

Dallas and Columbus isn't exactly a rivalry dripping with history, but a Hemming versus Hemming matchup somewhere down the line would give it something to talk about.

Oscar's path to the 14th pick was built on a strong foundation at both the collegiate and international levels. The Finnish forward made the jump to the NCAA this past season, recording a goal and seven assists for eight points in 19 games.

He truly shined on the international stage, putting up five goals and two assists for seven points across just six games with Finland's U18 national team, a performance that reinforced his standing as one of the more dynamic young players available in this draft class.

Emil, meanwhile, is the further along of the two and is currently regarded as Dallas's top prospect. Hemming is coming off a standout season with the Barrie Colts in the OHL, recording 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in 46 games. He got a taste of professional hockey this fall with AHL Texas, but after five games without a point he was returned to Barrie to continue developing.

The Stars want to see Emil grow into the full demands of being a pro, including in strength and conditioning. Scouts also noted his tendency to reload too slowly on defensive transitions at the World Juniors, something the organization wants to iron out before he sticks at the next level.

The road ahead is long for both brothers, but Friday was a reminder that the Hemming family is very much in the picture. Emil is trying to prove he belongs as a full-time pro and Oscar is just getting started.
