Recouping value after a blockbuster trade, Dallas landed a physical, high-IQ playmaker whose international pedigree and offensive instincts make him a potential steal for the blue line.
On Saturday, the Dallas Stars entered the second day of the 2026 NHL Draft without a first round pick, a consequence of the Mikko Rantanen trade, but wasted little time making an impact when their number was called.
With the 59th overall selection, Dallas took Czech defenseman Jakub Vaněček, an 18-year-old with the size, hockey sense and offensive upside to develop into a meaningful piece of the organization's backend.
Vaněček arrives with an impressive profile. The six-foot-two, near 200-pound defender was ranked as high as a near first round talent by some scouting outlets heading into the draft, a reflection of the regard scouts have for his hockey IQ and his ability to jump into the attack at the right moments. For a team that is always looking to build from the back end, the value at 59th overall is hard to argue with.

His performance on the international stage only added to his stock. At the U18 World Championships this past year, Vaněček recorded three goals and two assists for five points in seven games and helped his country to a silver medal finish, proving he can produce when the stakes are highest and the competition is at its strongest.
At the WHL level with the Tri-City Americans this past season, he posted 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points in 59 games, a strong offensive showing for a defenseman at that age and a clear indicator that he is comfortable driving play from the blue line.
With the Rantanen trade costing Dallas their first round pick, the pressure was on the scouting staff to find value later in the draft. Vaněček looks like exactly the kind of find that can make a draft class in the later rounds.
