Dallas looks to secure the veteran forward’s future as Jim Nill eyes a team-friendly extension, mirroring recent incentive-heavy tactics to balance veteran leadership with cap flexibility.

On Tuesday, The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta said on the Tom Gazzola Show that he believes the Dallas Stars will bring back veteran forward and pending free agent Tyler Seguin on a new contract, though at what he called "a smaller money deal."

That would make sense given recent history as in each of the last two seasons, general manager Jim Nill has brought back captain Jamie Benn on one-year, incentive-based deals, and Nill could take a similar approach with Seguin.

The 34-year-old is in the final season of the eight-year contract he signed with Dallas in 2019, which carries a $9.85 million cap hit and a full no-move clause. Seguin could re-sign and finish his career in Dallas on a short-term deal, potentially sacrificing some money in exchange for trade protection to ensure he stays with the Stars.

The Brampton, Ontario native has been working his way back from an ACL injury and has been steady so far, with two goals and two assists for four points through nine games. Many expected him to be a bounce-back candidate this season, but he will need to elevate his play to get closer to his production from last season and his point-per-game pace the year before.

If Seguin can stay fully healthy and finish with 50 to 60 points, he could earn a favorable new deal but it remains to be seen if he can stay in the lineup for that long with 131 games missed over the last three seasons alone.
