Dallas pursues homegrown defenseman Tyler Myers, potentially bringing the Texas native home after 17 NHL seasons. Will he join the Stars?

The Dallas Stars have reportedly expressed interest in veteran defenseman Tyler Myers of the Vancouver Canucks, potentially giving the Texas-born NHLer a long-awaited chance to play in his home state.

According to CHEK News’ Rick Dhaliwal and TSN’s Darren Dreger, Myers sat out Vancouver’s first game back from the Olympic break versus the Winnipeg Jets due to ongoing trade discussions. Dreger noted that Myers, who has a no-move clause, was taking time to consider an offer from the Detroit Red Wings, which may complicate Dallas’ pursuit.

While Detroit may have already made its move, the Stars possess one unique advantage in a chance to bring Myers back to Texas. Born in Houston, Myers has played 17 NHL seasons without returning to his home state, and a move to Dallas would provide him the opportunity to finish his career closer to home.

At six-foot-eight, Myers is valued for his size, reach, and defensive reliability. He has regularly contributed 20-30 points a season, and despite a challenging year with Vancouver resulting in a minus-25 rating, he posted a plus-18 rating over the last two seasons. His experience and presence could also serve as a mentor to the Stars’ top prospect Lian Bichsel, a towering six-foot-seven, 21-year-old defenseman, helping him develop the skills needed to succeed at the NHL level.

Myers’ contract carries a $3 million cap hit through next season, giving Dallas flexibility in managing their roster. A move could provide both a fresh start for Myers and the defensive depth the Stars are seeking as they push toward the playoffs.

If the deal comes together, Dallas could finally see one of its own Texan natives take the ice for the Stars, a storyline that would resonate both on and off the ice.
