THN.com's Stars website is beginning a player-by-player breakdown of the Dallas Stars. In this file, we're focusing on Stars cornerstone forward Tyler Seguin.

In advance of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, The Hockey News’ Dallas Stars team website is introducing a series of player projections for the Dallas Stars. We began the process with captain Jamie Benn, and we’re moving on to fellow Stars veteran forward Tyler Seguin.

Seguin’s stats on offense have slowly been diminishing, but he’s under contract for three more seasons, and he can still be a meaningful contributor. Let’s look at his stats, recent seasons and expectations:

Career: 351 goals, 788 points in 969 games

    2023-24 Statistics: 25 goals, 52 points in 68 games

Salary Cap Hit: $9.85 million, through 2026-27

Summary of 2023-24 Season: Seguin is no longer in his prime, but the 32-year-old forward still has lots left in the tank. His salary is the highest of any Stars player, and while it's safe to say his cap hit is worth more than his on-ice value, Seguin can still be part of a successful Stars team. Coach Peter DeBoer might choose to whittle down Seguin's minutes in the coming years, but Seguin doesn't have to be completely sheltered from elite competition. His instincts and creativity make him valuable to this team, and he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The Stars needed Seguin's help to get to the Western Conference final for the second straight season, and they’re going to rely on him again this coming year to do much of the heavy lifting for the team.

Projections For 2024-25 Season: Seguin will likely play 15-17 minutes per game, and play on Dallas' second line and second power play unit. If Seguin contributes somewhere in the area of 50-60 points in the regular season, and 15 points in a deep Dallas playoff run, Stars GM Jim Nill is going to be happy with Seguin. His days of being a point-per-game player are probably over, but Seguin can still be a key contributor as Dallas re-sets for another kick at the can.

Would it be possible that the Stars buy out his contract? Not until the final season, in our opinion. Seguin’s impact may lessen in the coming seasons, but his championship pedigree and professionalism is appreciated by Stars Nill. He’s a depreciating asset, but no team is going to trade for his cap hit, so he’s staying in Dallas until further notice.
