Dylan Larkin has expanded his preferred destinations to ten Stanley Cup contenders, but salary cap constraints and high asking prices leave the Red Wings in a stalemate.
Requesting a trade from your current team is not a new concept, but with each recent season, the number of players requesting trades and utilizing their trade protection to provide a very small list of teams, ultimately tying the hands of the team, has grown. The latest trend has been with several players that were part of Team USA, who won gold at the most recent Olympics.

Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsConnor Hellebyuck, star goalie for the Winnipeg Jets, requested a trade and has refused to report, missing ten games with no plan to return to the team. Another big player who has requested a trade is former Detroit Red Wings captain, Dylan Larkin. Unlike Hellebyuck, Larkin reported to camp and has been playing for the Red Wings this season but is still adamant on being traded.
He requested a trade in early June and the list of teams he was willing to go to was slim, as of earlier this week, Larkin has extended that list to include the following ten teams: the Stars, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and the Colorado Avalanche. All of which appear to be Stanley Cup contenders or have a Team USA teammate, if not both.
Unfortuntely for the Red Wings, a lot of those teams either don't have the cap space to acquire Larkin's $8.7 million dollar cap hit for the next four years. And understandably so, the Red Wings are looking to get a return worth losing Larkin for, which a good majority of these teams also don't have or aren't willing to part with the pieces that would take a deal. The Stars are strapped for cash and don't have the extra players they can afford to part with either. They had to pick up Larkin's former teammate David Perron after learning news that Oskar Back would be out with a broken finger, while also already missing Matt Duchene for several months.
Larkin has five points in seven games this season, with one goal and four assists. He missed a couple of games due to injury at the beginning of the season. It is unclear if any trades will happen for Larkin or the Red Wings soon, but as the trade deadline gets closer, anything could happen.
