The Dallas Stars made a roster move Tuesday, calling up defenseman Alexander Petrovic from the American League's Texas Stars. The 32-year-old Petrovic is going to be a fill-in option for Dallas as it deals with the injury-related absence of newcomer D-man Matt Dumba.
Dumba left Saturday's game against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury, and the Stars announced Tuesday he is considered week-to-week with the injury. Dumba is in his first year with Dallas after signing a two-year, $3.75-million-per-season contract this summer.
Petrovic spent the majority of last season with the AHL Stars, posting 17 assists and 22 points in 70 regular-season games. He did play seven Stanley Cup playoff games for Dallas, averaging 12:02 of ice time. But Petrovic is likely to be in the press box for the Stars' Tuesday game against San Jose, as veteran Brendan Smith is likely to take Dumba's spot in the top-six blueliner group for the foreseeable future.
Petrovic has spent the past five seasons in the AHL, skating for the Providence Bruins, Stockton Heat and Texas Stars in that span. He has 264 games of NHL experience, with all but one game coming as a member of the Florida Panthers. He's earning $775,000 per season in the first season of a two-year contract.
