After spending several seasons as a perennial Stanley Cup contender, the Dallas Stars now find themselves facing a different challenge of replenishing a relatively thin prospect pipeline. One player quickly emerging as a bright spot in that system is 19-year-old forward Cameron Schmidt.
Selected in the third round of last year’s NHL Draft, the Edmonton, Alberta native may not fit the traditional physical mold at five-foot-eight and 161 pounds, but his production has more than silenced any concerns about size. Schmidt has been nothing short of electric in the Western Hockey League, showcasing elite scoring ability and offensive instincts.
His standout play reached another level this past week, as Schmidt earned WHL Player of the Week honors after recording six goals and firing 18 shots on net in just three games. It is the latest highlight in what has been a dominant season.

Schmidt began the year with the Vancouver Giants before being dealt midseason to the Seattle Thunderbirds, where he has continued to thrive. Across both stops, he has totaled an impressive 51 goals and 49 assists for 100 points in 72 games, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players.
His impact has been especially significant in Seattle, helping the Thunderbirds post a 31-27-6-4 record and secure the seventh seed in the WHL playoffs. They are set to face the Penticton Vees in the opening round, entering as underdogs but carrying momentum thanks in large part to Schmidt’s red-hot form.
While Seattle may not be among the top favorites, Schmidt’s scoring touch gives them a legitimate chance to surprise. If he continues his torrid pace, the Thunderbirds could be poised to make an unexpected postseason run, with aspirations of reaching the WHL Championship and ultimately earning a berth in the Memorial Cup.
