Connor Hellebuyck’s blockbuster trade to New Jersey removes a perennial postseason roadblock for Dallas, clearing a path through the Central Division while transforming the Devils into immediate title contenders.
On Friday, the Dallas Stars received a significant boost as a superstar goaltender departed the Western Conference, potentially opening the door for a smoother path through the West.
The Winnipeg Jets traded Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils in a blockbuster deal that brought back young forward Dawson Mercer, recent 12th overall pick Alexander Command, and several additional pieces.
The trade has major implications for the Central Division as Winnipeg adds forward depth through Mercer and a valuable long-term asset in Command, but losing Hellebuyck leaves a void in goal. New Winnipeg netminder Stuart Skinner has been very solid so far this season but certainly won't give Stars fans the same horrors that Hellebuyck did.

The 33-year-old Michigan native has been a consistent thorn in the Stars’ side throughout his career, compiling a 14-12-6 record with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage across 32 games against Dallas. Now, Hellebuyck heads east to New Jersey, where he could make an immediate impact on a Devils team looking to establish itself as a serious contender.
Dallas is scheduled to face New Jersey next Tuesday at home, although it remains uncertain whether the three-time Vezina Trophy winner will be ready to suit up by then. The Stars will meet the Devils again on January 19, marking their final scheduled matchup against Hellebuyck this season. Beyond that, Dallas would only see him again if both teams reached the Stanley Cup Final.
For New Jersey, the acquisition represents a massive upgrade at its weakest position. The Devils currently sit in a playoff spot at 6-4-0 and have relied on veteran Jake Allen and young netminder Nico Daws in goal. The duo has helped the team post a middle-of-the-pack 3.10 goals against per game, but bringing in Hellebuyck gives New Jersey a proven elite presence between the pipes.
A three-time Vezina Trophy winner and Olympic gold medalist, Hellebuyck could help transform the Devils into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender in the Eastern Conference. For the Stars, one of their toughest obstacles is finally out of the conference and the division.
While Hellebuyck’s move makes New Jersey a more dangerous opponent on the other side of the league, Dallas will undoubtedly welcome the prospect of no longer having to navigate the Western Conference with one of the NHL’s best goaltenders standing in their way.
