Dallas bolsters its "Finnish Mafia" to a franchise record, securing defensive specialist Arttu Hyry and welcoming back playoff hero Joel Kiviranta to anchor the team’s veteran depth.

The Dallas Stars had their hands tied a bit on the first day of free agency with the looming Jason Robertson contract situation, but were still able to sign two familiar Finnish faces to the roster.

Early in the day, restricted free agent Arttu Hyry signed a two year contract worth $900,000 per season. The Stars qualified Hyry to keep him from hitting free agency right at the deadline earlier in the week, and were keen on keeping the defensive specialist.

Hyry's contract will function as a two-way deal in the first season and a one-way deal in the second. The depth forward was able to keep his place in the lineup during the final stretch of the season thanks in part to his face-off prowess.

Then, in the annual surprise depth signing, the Stars brought back Joel Kiviranta for a second stint with the team. Kiviranta is most well known for his play in the COVID playoff bubble, culminating in a Game 7 hat trick and overtime winner to beat the Colorado Avalanche in the second round.

Kiviranta was never able to recapture that goal scoring success and the Stars eventually allowed him to move on, where he signed with the Avalanche, of all teams. He cemented a depth spot on the roster and had a breakout goal scoring campaign in 2024-25, scoring 16 goals and adding seven assists. He followed it up with only three goals and six assists last year. Kiviranta was +22 in the last two seasons with Colorado.

With those two signings, the dubbed "Finnish Mafia" for the Stars is up to a franchise-high six players.
