Dallas solidifies its blue-line depth by retaining two reliable anchors, clearing the organizational runway for high-stakes negotiations with stars Jason Robertson and Mavrik Bourque this offseason.

The Dallas Stars announced Wednesday night that they have agreed to terms on two-year contract extensions with defensemen Kyle Capobianco and Luke Krys, securing a pair of players who have established themselves as reliable pieces in the Stars system.

Capobianco's deal carries a total value of $1.75 million, structured with a $875,000 cap hit in the first year before stepping up to $900,000 in the second. Terms of Krys' extension were not disclosed, as his deal is a two-way contract.

Capobianco has taken the long road to establishing himself at the NHL level as a third-round pick back in 2015. The 28-year-old defenseman has spent parts of eight seasons working his way through the professional ranks, logging time with the Arizona Coyotes, who drafted him, and later the Winnipeg Jets before landing in Dallas ahead of the 2024-25 season. In 107 career NHL games spread across those stops, Capobianco has proven he belongs as a depth option at the highest level.

With the Stars specifically, the veteran blueliner has appeared in 34 NHL games, contributing two goals and three assists for five points while carrying a minus-one rating. It is at the AHL level where Capobianco has truly stood out, putting together a dominant stint with Texas, posting eight goals and 46 assists for 54 points in 69 games and firmly establishing himself as one of the better defensemen in the league at that level.

Krys, the 25-year-old, six-foot-one defenseman went undrafted before earning his opportunity the hard way, signing with the Stars organization in March of 2024 and working his way into a consistent role. In 113 career AHL games, all with the Texas Stars, Krys has recorded 35 points while developing into a dependable presence on the back end. This past season he posted 16 points in 40 games during the regular season before appearing in all five games of the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs and chipping in two assists.

With Jason Robertson and Mavrik Bourque still unsigned and representing two of the more pressing restricted free agent situations in the league, Wednesday's moves suggest Dallas is methodically tying up its organizational loose ends before turning its full attention to the bigger decisions ahead.

Locking in Capobianco and Krys on affordable two-year deals clears the clutter and buys the front office the breathing room it needs to work through what figures to be a complicated summer at the negotiating table.
