Torn ACL sidelines Tyler Seguin. Dallas pivots, gaining crucial playoff cap space to bolster their championship push and pursue top trade targets.

The Dallas Stars are placing veteran forward Tyler Seguin on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman.

The 34-year-old had been attempting to mount a comeback after suffering the injury early in the season, holding out hope that he could return before the playoffs. Instead, Dallas has made the difficult decision to shut him down for the remainder of the year.

With Seguin officially moved to season-ending IR, the Stars will gain approximately $9.85 million in additional playoff cap space. That financial flexibility gives Dallas a significant opportunity ahead of the NHL trade deadline to strengthen its roster as it looks to snap a three-year streak of falling in the Western Conference Final.

Among the names the Stars have reportedly been linked to are Nazem Kadri, Tyler Myers, Blake Coleman, and Justin Faulk.

The loss is another difficult chapter in what has been an injury-riddled stretch for the longtime Dallas cornerstone. A native of Brampton, Ontario, Seguin was once among the league’s most dynamic offensive stars, regularly producing 70 to 80 points in a full healthy season. However, injuries have significantly disrupted his career trajectory, causing him to miss 230 games since the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

Before being sidelined, Seguin had shown promising signs of a rebound year, recording seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 27 games. While his season ends prematurely, the Stars now face a pivotal stretch, armed with newfound cap space and the urgency to capitalize on their championship window.
