The Dallas Stars traded a depth forward to the San Jose Sharks in return for a draft pick.
After a trip to the Western Conference Final, the Dallas Stars were one of the final four teams to reach the off-season, but they are one of the first teams to start making moves for next year.
The Stars traded forward Ty Dellandrea to the San Jose Sharks for a 2025 fourth-round pick that was previously the Winnipeg Jets fourth round pick.
Dellandrea was a first-round pick, 13th overall, by Dallas in the 2018 draft held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. He made his NHL debut in the 2020-2021 season, but didn't play his first full season until 2022-2023. Dellandrea is a pesky fourth-liner who is great on the penalty kill, but hasn't really made an impact in his career above the third line. In the 2023-2024 season, he found himself as the 13th forward most games after Dallas made additions to the team during last year's off-season.
Stars head coach Pete DeBoer always spoke highly of Dellandrea's ability to jump off the bench after sitting several games in a row, ready to lock in and play well whenever called upon. One of the greatest examples of that was in the 2023 Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Dellandrea had not played in 10 days, but when an injury occurred, he was thrown in the line up and scored two goals in Game 5 to extend the series.
The 23 year old's best offensive season was in the 2022-2023 season, recording nine goals and 28 points. Last season, Dellandrea played 42 games and tallied two goals and nine points.
Dellandrea was loved in the locker room and was roommates with goalie Jake Oettinger. But with the Stars forward roster only getting deeper and Mavrik Bourque's inevitable addition to the lineup, Dallas had some tough decisions to make. Meanwhile, Dellandrea will be an asset to the Sharks team while they undergo a rebuild. He will likely get more minutes and an opportunity to play in a bigger role.
The Sharks have the first overall draft pick this year, with Maklin Celebrini as the consensus top choice.
