The Dallas Stars announced Tuesday that star forward Tyler Seguin is expected to close to the rest of the season after suffering a ACL injury. Bench boss Glen Gulutzan told reporters Wednesday that Seguin “is going to be out a significant amount to time, probably the rest of the season.”
The injury occurred early in Tuesday’s game when Seguin got slightly tangled with another player, fell awkwardly backward, and injured his leg. He required assistance from two teammates to leave the ice and could barely put any weight on it. The Stars free up $3.82 million in cap space with Seguin on long-term injury reserve but if it’s officially ruled that his season is finished, they could apply his entire $9.85 million salary toward relief.
Seguin’s absence marks another setback in a career hampered by injuries as the 31-year-old had returned late last season following hip surgery to repair a labral tear and femoral acetabular impingement. Prior to Tuesday’s injury, Seguin was showing signs of regaining his form, recording seven goals and ten assists for 17 points in 27 games this season. Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, injury issues have kept him out of 230 games.
Adding to the Stars’ woes, defenseman Lian Bichsel is also expected to miss significant time following surgery, sidelining him for six to eight weeks.
The team now faces a challenging stretch without two key contributors, with Seguin’s loss leaving a significant hole in Dallas’ offense. The organization has not provided a specific timeline for Seguin’s return, though recovery from an ACL tear typically requires several months of rehabilitation.
