The women’s ice hockey tournament is nearing its conclusion, and the United States opened the knockout rounds in dominant fashion Friday with a commanding win over Italy.
The game quickly turned into a one-sided affair as the Americans overwhelmed Italy en route to a 6-0 victory. From the opening puck drop, Team USA controlled possession, generated sustained offensive pressure and left little doubt about who would advance.
Leading the charge once again was 24-year-old Coppell, Texas native Taylor Heise Bilka. Bilka continued her standout tournament by adding another goal and firing seven shots on net in just 15:28 of ice time. Her speed and willingness to attack off the rush created repeated problems for the Italian defense.
Through five games, Bilka has emerged as one of Team USA’s most impactful players. She now has four goals and one assist for five points, placing her among the team’s offensive leaders as the competition intensifies.

The Americans will now turn their attention to Monday’s semifinals, though their opponent has yet to be determined. With a berth in either the gold or bronze medal game on the line, expectations remain sky high for a program that consistently contends for Olympic supremacy.
Oddsmakers agree. According to BetMGM, the United States entered the knockout stage as heavy favorites at minus-333 to capture gold. That confidence is fueled in part by a decisive 5-0 round-robin victory over Canada women's national ice hockey team, their longtime rivals.
History, however, adds intrigue. Since women’s hockey was introduced at the 1998 Winter Olympics, the Americans have defeated Canada in just two of six gold medal matchups between the two powerhouse programs. Should the rivals meet again for the ultimate prize, past results suggest the path to gold would be anything but guaranteed.
