The Dallas Stars announced Evgenii Dadonov will be out with a newly discovered fracture.

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports - Stars Forward to Miss Some Time

At morning skate before Tuesday's game against Carolina, head coach Pete DeBoer reported that Evgenii Dadonov will be out "for a while" due to a fracture. This comes as a bit of a surprise, since it was unknown that he was even dealing with a potential injury.

While no injury is good for any team, the Stars are in a unique position with two forwards in the AHL that have been on fire this season and look NHL ready. Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Borque both represented the Texas Stars at the recent AHL All-Star Game and Stankoven leads the AHL in points by a significant margin,

The Stars also have former first round pick Ty Dellandrea ready to slot in to any spot so far this season, and has already spelled Dadonov for a couple games when he was healthy scratched. Dellandrea has played the previous two games against Toronto and Montreal, slotting in for Craig Smith and Radek Faksa.

The presence of Dellandrea as a reliable 13th forward this season has allowed Dallas to carry only one extra forward and defenseman (Joel Hanley), which has helped the Stars accrue extra cap space to take advantage of late in the season. Most teams carry 23 players and do not get this benefit, but Dallas has both acquired more money and allowed their star young players to follow the track of Thomas Harley from last season, playing consistently in a top line role in the AHL.

While many might see this as the long-awaited opportunity to see Stankoven or Borque in the NHL, there is always a chance that Dallas decides to continue to accrue more cap space for the final stretch of the season and rely on Ty Dellandrea for the time being while not calling either young forward up.

If that is the case, it could only be temporary, as everyone in the organization understands that Stankoven and Borque are essentially better than the AHL level already and want to give each a shot to prove themselves at the NHL level. Injuries always happen, and history would say that this might not be the only injury the Stars are faced with as the hockey gets tougher and the playoffs get closer.
