The veteran defensive specialist brings gritty leadership and elite penalty-killing to Manhattan, offering the struggling Rangers a reliable bottom-six spark as he battles for a roster spot.

On Monday, the New York Rangers are taking a look at a familiar penalty-killing forward, signing former Dallas Stars forward Luke Glendening to a professional tryout agreement, giving the veteran a chance to earn a spot on the roster.

The 37-year-old never developed into more than a 20-point scorer over a 14-year NHL career, but he built his reputation on reliability, leadership and special teams work, and that earned him a loyal following wherever he played, including with Stars fans.

His path to the NHL began close to home with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he posted 26 points in 51 games in his one season there. The Red Wings brought him up the following year, and he appeared in 56 games but managed just seven points.

Detroit became his home for the next eight seasons as he would go on to play 554 games with the Red Wings, recording 57 goals and 69 assists for 126 points. He also wore an "A" as an assistant captain from 2019 to 2021, a testament to his leadership, even though he never topped 23 points in a season.

In 2021, Glendening signed with Dallas and recorded 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points in 152 games with the Stars, plus three points in 23 playoff games. He played a key special teams role during the club's first of three recent Western Conference Final appearances.

After two seasons in Dallas, Glendening spent two more with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Last season, he split his time between the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers.

Now he joins a Rangers team that is struggling to score. New York's offense ranks in the bottom ten in the league at 2.80 goals per game, and the club will likely welcome his experience, veteran leadership and penalty-killing ability as it looks for a spark.
