Joe Pavelski's passion for the game remains as strong as ever.

DALLAS - Even after 17 seasons and 1,250 games, Joe Pavelski’s anticipation level for opening night is simply immeasurable.

Fortunately, the veteran forward won’t need to wait much longer as the Stars are set to begin their 30th campaign in Dallas on Thursday, Oct. 12 at American Airlines Center.

Pavelski, 39, still appreciates everything about the incredible opportunity he has enjoyed to play hockey for a living.

“You don’t take anything for granted. You really enjoy this game. I’m really excited that it’s getting close. You can kind of feel it’s coming,” said Pavelski, following Thursday's morning skate. “Getting a few of these exhibition games, they’re nice to kind of get the pace and kind of get some of those feels going. Knowing that the season is right around the corner is exciting.”

The University of Wisconsin product, who was a seventh-round selection of the Sharks in 2003, has enjoyed an exceptionally productive career with 449 goals and 1,001 points between San Jose and Dallas.

The Plover, WI native ranks 11th on the all-time scoring list amongst American-born players in NHL history.

But, he still hasn’t accomplished his ultimate objective - winning a Stanley Cup - which continues to fuel his inner-fire and keeps him coming back extra motivated year after year.

“Obviously, you want to win. That’s the end goal. There’s a process, and there’s no easy way around it. In the summer, you’ve got to kind of do some work and get into camp shape. Then, there’s camp, and you’re looking to take another level as far as getting the speed up and getting into game shape. I think the process keeps you going and keeps you honest,” said Pavelski. “There’s 82 games before you even have an opportunity to play in the playoffs, so there’s a lot of work to be done. I think it’s fun. I enjoy the road, the game, the fans and the atmosphere. It all kind of adds into it.”

Speaking of fun, sharing his remarkable hockey journey with his 12-year-old son, Nate, has been a thrill.

Pavelski wouldn’t trade the unique moments they’ve enjoyed together for anything.

“It’s really special. It’s something that when you’re in a situation like that, like an All-Star Game, and he’s of age where he has an understanding and he’s got favorite players and he’s collected some of the sticks and he’s just around it, you see how much he loves the game,” explained Pavelski. “It’s very similar to how we were when we were kids and just being a boy. Having him around the guys, it’s fun to be able to share, especially at his age now.”

As far as Nate’s favorite NHLers are concerned, the four-time All-Star had a cool reply.

“He’s got a lot of them. Probably Wyatt [Johnston] is at the top of the list right now,” replied Pavelski. “At the end of the day, when push comes to shove, I think I’ll be up there.”

Sounds about right.
