YOUNG HOCKEY FANS everywhere are falling in love with players such as Matt Duchene, Drew Doughty and Steven Stamkos. If the kids are lucky, they may even meet and get an autograph from their talented heroes. But players are fans, too, so when Duchene – before he was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche, ironically – got his hands on an autographed Joe Sakic jersey, he was over the moon. Stamkos also made sure to get a stick from the future Hall of Famer when he had the chance.
“That’s my prized possession,” Stamkos said. “He was my favorite player growing up.”
Sticks are traded by numerous NHLers as mementos, some because they respect the opponent, some because they want to remember playing on the same team as them. Doughty recalled being asked by Alex Ovechkin if he wanted to trade and not believing the Washington superstar.
“I thought he was chirping me,” Doughty laughed. But Ovie said he was being real, so the Caps and Kings equipment managers exchanged twigs after the game.
In the following pages, you will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the personal collections of Duchene, Doughty and Stamkos, taken at their parents’ homes over the summer. Enjoy the tour.
