For the first time in his admittedly brief tenure as a Red Wing, Alex Lyon appears to be experiencing something of a slump. In three games since the All-Star break and bye week, Lyon is 1-2-0 with an .827 save percentage and 5.01 goals against average. None of that looks very flattering, but it's hardly cause to panic for Detroit either. However, the idea of the Red Wings as Cup contenders does seem to swing at some level on Lyon.
After yesterday's practice, Derek Lalonde said of Lyon, ""We thought it'd be a nice little reset for him. Obviously he gave us a really good month of hockey in January, but Reimer had an unbelievable performance. These are good conversations we haven't had in a while, where our goaltending's been."
Lalonde went on to add that in his performance against the Oilers (the primary culprit for his ugly February statistics, Detroit put him "in a really bad situation where it was gonna be a rest/reset for him, then five minutes in, he's facing McDavid and the boys" after Ville Husso went down with a first-period injury."
On the most recent episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discussed potential pathways to liberating Lyon from his present slump. Here's a sample from that conversation:
