Hockey season is upon us.

The Detroit Red Wings released their training camp roster Wednesday, a day ahead of the start of camp. The roster includes 68 players in total, all competing for jobs with the NHL, AHL and ECHL teams within the Red Wings organization.

Broken down by position, there are 37 forwards, 22 defensemen and nine goaltenders on the list. One of those defensemen is current restricted free agent Moritz Seider, the team’s top defenseman who is still without a contract. Of negotiations, general manager Steve Yzerman said Tuesday that the two sides "continue to talk," before adding "I don't think we're terribly far apart.”

The majority of the players on this roster are those the Red Wings have signed. Forwards Hunter Johannes, Carson Bantle, Dominik Shine and Gabriel Seger are all signed to AHL deals with Grand Rapids, and so is defenseman Josiah Didier and goaltender Jan Bednar.

Among the attendees, 10 are first round picks made by Detroit. This includes defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who is expected to earn a spot on the NHL roster after a strong finish to last season.

Other prospects attending training camp are forwards Carter Mazur, Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson, who have shown promise in the AHL and junior hockey and will push for consideration for the roster.

Another name to know is forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, a Norwegian winger who the Red Wings drafted 15th overall at the 2024 NHL Draft. He interrupted his season with Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League to attend camp.

Thirteen players are attending training camp on professional tryout deals. Highlights include former Nashville and Tampa Bay tough guy Austin Watson, as well as former Red Wing forward Alex Chiasson. The former is on the seventh PTO of his career. His most recent one came with the Boston Bruins last preseason, but he didn’t earn a contract. His last NHL deal was with Detroit in 2022-23, which saw him contribute six goals and nine points in 20 games played.

Training camp begins Thursday morning, when Team Lindsay takes the ice to kick off camp. Teams Delvecchio and Howe will practice later in the day. The players will remain in these separate groups until Sunday’s Red & White game, a scrimmage, takes place.
