The latest episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast The Silky Mitten State, covering Daniel Sprong, Joe Veleno, and much more
The latest episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast The Silky Mitten State is live!
We open up this week's show with a game: Identifying the NHL's equivalent of JJ Redick. If you've somehow missed the miraculous come up, Redick went from podcast host/volunteer fourth-grade basketball coach to head coach of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, so Connor and I tried to identify a recently retired NHL player who isn't currently coaching that we'd like to see take over as a coach. Check out the featured video above to see our conclusions.
From there, we discussed what remains on the heap of unsigned unrestricted free agents, beginning with Daniel Sprong, who of course spent last season in Detroit. Connor also brings up Tyler Johnson (last of the Chicago Blackhawks) as a potential UFA of interest.
After our UFA chat, we move on to discussing Joe Veleno's future in Detroit. Specifically, we consider the ways in which he can make himself essential to the Red Wings' long-term future, not just a useful low-cost option, either by becoming a dominant fourth line player (admittedly something of an oxymoron) or finding a way to move up the lineup and add some more offense.
From there, we move on to the real story of the week: the return of video game college football via the release of EA Sports College Football 25. Connor discusses his experiences playing the game, then we talk about the problems and possibilities around adding a college hockey dimension to EA's NHL game. Finally, we close the show with a salute to Evgeny Kuznetsov, whom it seems has played his last NHL game.
