Tensions boil over in Detroit as the captain’s trade request signals a seismic shift. Explore the strained relationship with management and the frontrunners vying for the veteran.
It was a difficult day for Detroit Red Wings fans on Thursday as reports surfaced that longtime captain and franchise cornerstone Dylan Larkin has requested a trade from the only NHL team he has ever known.
Few in Detroit ever imagined the Waterford Township native would one day wear a jersey other than the Winged Wheel, but that possibility now appears closer than ever.
The news was first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, who said he had confirmed the information through multiple sources. However, Friedman noted he was unable to obtain comment from either the Red Wings organization or Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson.
Additional reporting later in the day suggested the situation has been developing behind the scenes for some time. TSN's Darren Dreger expanded on Friedman's report, stating, "It's clear this move has been in the works for a while."
On Friday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast, Friedman outlined several teams that could emerge as suitors for the veteran center. He also pointed out that Larkin's no-trade clause remains in effect for the next two seasons, giving him significant control over where he ultimately lands.
Among the clubs Friedman mentioned were the San Jose Sharks, though he questioned whether Larkin would be interested in joining another team still working its way back into playoff contention.
The team drawing the most attention, according to Friedman, is the Minnesota Wild. Fresh off a blockbuster move to acquire Larkin's Team USA teammate Quinn Hughes, Minnesota could be positioned to make another major splash. The Wild enter the offseason with more than $12.7 million in available cap space, own first-round picks in three of the next four drafts, and possess several highly regarded young players, including Danila Yurov, who could appeal to Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman.

Friedman also emphasized that any potential deal will ultimately be decided by Yzerman, noting that the Hall of Fame executive "will not be bullied into any scenario he dislikes, no matter how much pressure is applied."
Reports have also suggested that the relationship between Yzerman and Larkin has become strained in recent years. Detroit's inability to reach the playoffs for a tenth consecutive season, combined with Larkin's public calls for management to make more aggressive roster improvements, may have contributed to the growing divide that ultimately led to the trade request.
Larkin, 29, is coming off another productive campaign, scoring a career-high 34 goals while adding 33 assists for 67 points in 74 games. The season marked his fifth consecutive year producing at least 65 points. Beyond his offensive contributions, Larkin continued to serve as Detroit's most versatile forward, leading the team in even-strength ice time while also playing major roles on both the power play and penalty kill.
Any team interested in acquiring Larkin will likely need to pay a significant price. Franchise captains and top-line centers rarely become available, and Detroit will undoubtedly demand a substantial return if it chooses to move its captain. What was already shaping up to be a pivotal offseason for the Red Wings has suddenly become even more dramatic than any fan could possibly imagine.
