Red Wings prospects and current Grand Rapids Griffins Jonatan Berggren and Simon Edvinsson were both named to the AHL's All-Star Classic

Berggren's Latest NHL Cameo

Wednesday afternoon, prized Red Wing prospects and current Grand Rapids Griffins Jonatan Berggren and Simon Edvinsson were both named to the AHL's All-Star Classic, which will take place February 4th and 5th in San Jose.

Berggren currently leads the Griffins in points with eight goals and 15 assists for 23 of them in 22 games in the AHL this year.  Edvinsson is third for Grand Rapids in scoring with 19 points (six goals and 13 assists) in 29 games this year.

For Red Wing fans, the pair's selection to the AHL All-Star game will surely only intensify the calls for both to become fixtures of Detroit's NHL lineup.  Berggren—who played 67 games for the Red Wings a year ago—has featured in just nine NHL games this season, while Edvinsson—who played in nine last season—has played just twice for the Red Wings this year.

Berggren's lack of NHL opportunity left him as the subject of trade rumors last month, while Edvinsson's inability to crack Detroit's NHL lineup has been particularly puzzling the wake of a month of December in which the Red Wings defense corps (and team defense more generally) struggled mightily.

How Can Simon Edvinsson Spark the Red Wings?

Among the other headlining names who have been tapped to feature in the event are New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann and Dallas Stars prospect Mavrik Bourque.

The San Jose Barracuda (affiliate of the Sharks) will be hosting the event at TechCU Arena in San Jose.
