The Red Wings could follow the path of other contenders and use young talent in top six roles.
We are seeing a new wave of young talent being inserted into the NHL. Many teams are bringing up young prospects every season but more and more are putting their top end players in very favorable positions for the best possible outcome.
The Edmonton Oilers recently traded for prospect Isaac Howard and early lineup projections already have him slated to play with Connor McDavid while in St. Louis, the Blues top prospect in Jimmy Snuggerud is expected to play on the top line with Robert Thomas.
Adding in fast, young players at low-cost against the cap is starting to be looked at and explored more around the league as we head into the season. It begs the question of if the Red Wings would be willing to try something similar to this and who would they do it for?
Red Wings’ Marco Kasper Emerging as Crucial Piece in Team’s Top-Six Centre Puzzle
Detroit prospect Marco Kasper could be answer for crucial second line centre spot.
Detroit has a need for a top six left wing that will be able to play on the top line with captain Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. The team isn't interested in breaking up the second line unit of Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane due to their longstanding partnership and connection plus second line centre Marco Kasper has great numbers with his two wingers.
Daily faceoff has early projections showing newcomer James van Riemsdyk on the team's top line, operating as a steady netfront presence. If the team wants to try a different approach, why not look into Carter Mazur?

The Red Wings' 2021 third-round pick has yet to see a full opportunity at the NHL level and could be looked at in a Isaac Howard-type of role. The 23-year-old left winger has recorded 28 goals and 30 assists for 58 points through 86 AHL games with Grand Rapids. Mazur has proven to be an offensive talent in college with 36 goals and 39 assists for 75 points through 81 games at the University of Denver.
What Todd McLellan and company should be looking at is Mazur's play compared to some of the other options at his position furthur down the lineup with van Riemsdyk, Elmer Soderblom and Michael Rasmussen. If he can manage to beat out one of the three for a job in training camp, there's no reason why they shouldn't experiment with the idea in scrimmages as many Cup contenders are seemingly going to try it out.
