Record-breaking defenseman Marcus Crawford returns to Grand Rapids following a historic MVP campaign. The blue-line scoring leader brings veteran poise and offensive firepower to a surging Griffins roster.
On Sunday, the Detroit Red Wings' AHL affiliate in the Grand Rapids Griffins made a smart depth move for the organization, adding the reigning MVP of the ECHL, defenseman Marcus Crawford, to a one-year deal.
The 29-year-old Ajax, Ontario, native is coming off a historic 86-point campaign in which he led the ECHL in scoring from the blue line with 72 assists in 70 games for the Kansas City Mavericks, the Seattle Kraken's ECHL affiliate.
Crawford became the first defenseman in league history to win the ECHL scoring title, and he was also named to the All-ECHL First Team and won ECHL Defenseman of the Year honors. Crawford was a standout in the postseason as well, totaling 14 points in 17 playoff games and helping lead the Mavericks to the 2026 Kelly Cup Finals.
Crawford has spent time in the Red Wings' system before, playing his first games at the professional level with Grand Rapids, playing eight games in 2018-19 after wrapping up his junior career with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL.

That same season, he moved to the ECHL's Toledo Walleye, where he posted 26 points on three goals and 23 assists in 48 games as a rookie. He later spent time with the Orlando Solar Bears before landing with the Kansas City Mavericks, where he put together three productive seasons, totaling 100 points in 143 games.
Crawford then spent two seasons overseas from 2022 to 2024, playing for the Cardiff Devils of Britain's EIHL. He was outstanding there, recording 13 goals and 99 assists for 112 points and a plus-72 rating in 108 regular-season games. He was named EIHL Defenseman of the Year in both of his seasons with Cardiff and led all defensemen in scoring both years as well.
His return to North America in 2024 sparked a bounce-back stretch that culminated in his career-best, MVP-winning season this past year with Kansas City. Now he'll look to build on that success and be a meaningful addition to a Grand Rapids team coming off a franchise-best season.
