The latest episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast, The Silky Mitten State, is live!
On this week's show, my co-host Connor Earegood and I review a busy week for the Red Wings from the Draft in Vegas to free agency. It's a free-flowing show organized around a simple question: Did Detroit improve this summer?
We work our way position by position through the Red Wings transactions to date, assessing the way the roster is set to evolve from last year into this. After some digressions on the general wild expenditures of the UFA period, we spend a good chunk of time focused on the impact of re-signing Patrick Kane and adding Vladimir Tarasenko, parsing the benefits of each acquisition while also considering the limitations. We discuss whether Tarasenko is indeed the "impact" forward of which Steve Yzerman spoke at the end of the season, a player who can drive offense even in a scenario in which Dylan Larkin is injured. We also discuss the value of depth signings Christian Fischer (of course, a re-signing) and Tyler Motte. We also touch on Yzerman's admission today that Detroit did have one UFA move it might have liked that fell through.
On the back end, we discuss Erik Gustafsson as a replacement for Shayne Gostisbehere and our general sense that the overall group takes a step back absent Gostisbehere and the now traded Jake Walman. We proceed to discuss the low risk, high reward value of Cam Talbot in net, as well as the potential for a Ville Husso or Alex Lyon trade in the future. We also weigh in on the Yzer-plan's general direction of travel after (at least the majority of) the summer's wheeling and dealing.
To wrap the show, we chat about the draft, the Sphere, and development camp. You can check out an excerpt in the featured video above or listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts:
