The Detroit Red Wings have announced that while Dylan Larkin will report to Training Camp next week, the club will begin the upcoming season without a captain.
It's been an offseason of uncertainty for the Detroit Red Wings, who have had to deal with the shocking trade request of Dylan Larkin along with the departure of Steve Yzerman as general manager.
But while the Red Wings continue their search for their next general manager, they've announced Dylan Larkin's immediate fate.
Larkin will be reporting to Training Camp, which begins next week - but he's no longer the captain of the club.
“We look forward to seeing Dylan and the rest of his teammates at Little Caesars Arena for the start of training camp as we prepare for the upcoming season," the Red Wings announced on X.
They continued:
“The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named. Any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place."
Meanwhile, Larkin himself has released a statement through the club about his leadership role.
“Over the past couple of weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions," Larkin's statement read. "I’ve appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates. When new leadership is in place, we’ll talk further about the direction of the team. We will keep those conversations private, and I will keep my focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room.”

Larkin requested a trade earlier this offseason, a move that was confirmed by former general manager Steve Yzerman.
Yzerman made it clear that while Larkin did request a trade, he still has multiple years remaining on his contract, and there was no guarantee that the request would be granted.
Originally from Waterford, Michigan, Larkin played college hockey for the Michigan Wolverines and was a first-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Red Wings. He made his NHL debut with Detroit in October 2015.
He became the 37th captain in club history in January 2021, succeeding Henrik Zetterberg.
