After a crowded Detroit pipeline stalled his ascent, Amadeus Lombardi finally eyes his NHL debut as the Devils’ newest weapon against their intense Eastern Conference foes.
The New Jersey Devils will open their 2026-27 season Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, looking to rebound from a disappointing campaign.
For Detroit Red Wings fans, the matchup will also provide an opportunity to watch a former prospect begin a new chapter in his career.
Amadeus Lombardi, a fourth-round pick by the Red Wings in 2022, was traded to New Jersey during the offseason in exchange for a fourth-round selection, which Detroit later used to draft Canadian center Adam Levac.

The 23-year-old Newmarket native posted nearly a point per game across his sophomore and junior AHL seasons, putting himself in position to potentially make the jump to the NHL.
However, Detroit’s prospect pipeline had become increasingly crowded, with several young players competing for NHL opportunities. That logjam could have made it difficult for Lombardi to receive the opportunity he was looking for in Detroit.
Thursday’s season opener could mark the beginning of Lombardi's first significant opportunity at the NHL level, although it will come with the Devils rather than the Red Wings. Even more notably for Detroit fans, Lombardi will look to establish himself in the same Eastern Conference as his former organization.
