Homegrown star Alex DeBrincat eyes a long-term future in Hockeytown as record-breaking production and family ties position the prolific goal-scorer for a massive new extension in Detroit.
On Wednesday, longtime Detroit Red Wings beat reporter Bob Duff appeared on NHL Tonight to discuss the team, with one of the topics of conversation being the future of Alex DeBrincat in Hockeytown. The 28-year-old Farmington Hills native will enter next season in the final year of his current contract.
Duff offered some encouraging news on that front explaining, "From talking to Alex at the end of the season, he wants to be here, he's from Michigan...he likes having his family close."
The comments come on the heels of a career year for DeBrincat, who tied his personal best with 41 goals and set new highs with 44 assists and 85 points, nine better than his previous career mark.

With the salary cap projected to keep climbing, his next contract figures to blow well past his current $7.875 million cap hit. The two-time All-Star isn't without leverage in the matter either, as his current deal includes a 16-team no-trade list.
Over his time in Detroit, DeBrincat has settled in as a consistently productive player, climbing from a 65-point scorer to an 80-point one, and he figures to remain one of the organization's leading pillars as the franchise moves into a new era following the departure of longtime general manager Steve Yzerman. DeBrincat will be counted on to help lead the Red Wings out of their decade-long playoff drought.
For his career, DeBrincat has 294 goals and 301 assists for 595 points across 696 games over ten NHL seasons. Of that total, 222 points have come in 246 games over his four seasons in Detroit, representing his best per-game production with any club, after splitting the first six years of his career between the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators.
