With Dylan Larkin requesting a trade and Alex DeBrincat entering a contract year after a career-best 41-goal season, Detroit faces a high-stakes rebuild versus return dilemma.

The Detroit Red Wings are at a crossroads, caught somewhere between playoff contender and extended rebuild, and the uncertainty surrounding the franchise's direction may be pushing some of their most important players toward the exit.

With Dylan Larkin having already requested a trade out of Detroit, new reports suggest teams around the league are now turning their attention to another Red Wings cornerstone.

According to The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta, teams have been poking around on Alex DeBrincat, with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres among the organizations expressing interest in the 28-year-old winger. The timing makes considerable sense on multiple levels.

DeBrincat is entering a contract year, which means Detroit faces a genuine risk of losing him for nothing if they cannot convince him to sign an extension, and a player with his offensive profile will have no shortage of suitors when the time comes.

What makes the situation even more pressing for Detroit is what DeBrincat just put together on the ice. The Farmington Hills, Michigan native quietly turned in the best season of his career in 2025-26, posting 41 goals and 44 assists for 85 points in 82 games. That kind of production from a hometown player who has clearly elevated his game to another level makes this one of the most difficult decisions the Red Wings front office has faced in recent years.

Detroit would be selling at peak value, bringing back meaningful assets that could accelerate whatever direction the organization ultimately chooses. With Larkin already pushing his way out and DeBrincat trade speculation now picking up steam, the Red Wings are facing a pivotal summer that will go a long way toward defining what this franchise is and where it is headed.
