Friday night in Grand Rapids, the Griffins opened their season by hosting the Milwaukee Admirals at Van Andel Arena, and, thanks in large part to top Red Wings prospects Sebastian Cossa and Marco Kasper, they earned a 3-0 victory. Cossa got his season started with a dominant outing in net. He earned a 35-save shutout, including 15 saves in the third period to preserve the victory.
Kasper have the Griffins the lead as the game approached its midpoint, finishing off a give and go with a tidy forehand-backhand as he drove the net. Carter Mazur would add a second before the end of the period. Eventually, Dominik Shine would add an empty-netter with 15 seconds to play to seal the victory. Austin Watson assisted on both Kasper and Shine's goals.
After a disappointing NHL opener on Thursday, the Griffins were able to strike an optimistic chord, not just because of the result but also because of the players who delivered it. In Cossa, Kasper, Mazur, and Watson, Grand Rapids saw a number of players who may well be counted on in Detroit by season's end deliver strong performances, not least Kasper, who continued the momentum of his excellent pre-season.
