A severe knee injury may explain Marco Kasper's struggles. The young forward battled through pain, impacting his production and future outlook.
It was a difficult season for the Detroit Red Wings, and few players embodied that struggle more than second-year forward Marco Kasper.
After a promising rookie campaign in which he recorded 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points in 77 games, expectations were high for the 22-year-old Austrian. Many believed Kasper was poised for a breakout season, potentially reaching the 50-point mark while centering a skilled second line alongside Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane.
This never materialized as Detroit did see a strong season from Andrew Copp, who stepped into the second line role and delivered career-best production, Kasper struggled to find consistency.
He eventually slid down into the bottom six and finished the season with just nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 81 games, a significant drop from his rookie totals. However, new information suggests Kasper’s regression may not have been solely performance-related.
According to a report from German outlet Hockey-news.info, citing the Austrian national team, Kasper will not participate in the upcoming IIHF World Championship due to a severe knee injury. The report indicates the forward had been dealing with the issue for “some time” and he was likely dealing with it during the season.

Kasper reportedly underwent an MRI, though results have not yet been disclosed. What is known is that the young forward has been using crutches and a knee brace and is expected to undergo rehabilitation throughout the offseason.
The revelation provides important context to what was widely viewed as a disappointing sophomore season. As the Red Wings look ahead, Kasper’s health will be an interesting storyline as he enters his third season, he may finally be able to take the step forward, that fans were expecting of Kasper entering this season.
