EA Sports sparks controversy as Detroit’s defensive anchor matches his teammates’ scores, while Anaheim’s veteran goaltender slides down the ranks in a surprising wave of new ratings.

On Wednesday, EA Sports continued rolling out more details on the upcoming release of NHL 27, and the biggest piece of news once again centered on player ratings.

A day earlier, EA had released ratings for most of the league's marquee forwards, with Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond all landing at 89 overall for Detroit.

That trio's ratings sparked plenty of conversation around Moritz Seider, given the German defenseman is widely expected to be the top-rated player on the Red Wings roster. Yet EA kept the trend going, listing Seider at 89 overall as well, matching his fellow teammates.

That places him as the third-best right-shot defenseman in the game, tied with Adam Fox, Charlie McAvoy and Noah Dobson, and puts him outside the top 12 defensemen overall, a placement that caught plenty of fans off guard given the season Seider just had.

EA also released its goaltender ratings on Wednesday. John Gibson, coming off a strong campaign, landed an 85 overall, tying him with a group of other notable netminders around the league, including Sergei Bobrovsky, Dan Vladar, Joel Hofer, Linus Ullmark and Karel Vejmelka.
