Simon Edvinsson scores OT winner as Griffins beat Iowa Wild in Grand Rapids

Last night, with six seconds remaining in overtime, the Red Wings top prospect, Simon Edvinsson, took matters into his own hands for a brilliant solo goal to beat the Iowa Wild 3-2 in overtime at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.  The rangy defenseman slipped through a crowd of Wild defenders to fire home the OT winner.

After a relatively slow offensive start to the season, the Griffins are now surging.

Edvinsson now has eight goals and 19 assists in 46 games for the season.  Meanwhile, during last night's game, 2022 Detroit first round pick Marco Kasper scored (with Jonatan Berggren providing the primary assist).  With than assist, Berggren now has 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in his last 21 games.

In net, Sebastian Cossa—who was named the AHL's player of the week three days ago—made 26 saves on 28 shots to secure the victory.  Cossa's personal point streak is now nine games, during which he is 7-0-2.

With last night's result in hand, the Griffins have now extended their present point streak to 16 games (during which they are 12-0-2-2).  That is the second best mark in franchise history, with the first a 19-game unbeaten run spanning February and March of 2015 (they went 15-0-3-1 during that span).  With a record of 26-15-5-3 for the season, Grand Rapids presently sits second in the AHL's Central Division, trailing only the Milwaukee Admirals.

The Griffins are off today, before a back-to-back this weekend at home at Van Andel.  They will take on the Wild again Friday night, before hosting the Rockford Ice Hogs Saturday night.
