Veteran Dallas executive Scott White emerges as a frontrunner in Detroit, looking to parlay decades of Stars experience into his first general manager role with the Red Wings.
As the Detroit Red Wings continue working through their front office search, weighing which candidates to interview and what kind of management structure they want moving forward, one name has recently emerged as a potential contender in longtime Dallas Stars executive Scott White.
The Red Wings' search has already produced some notable developments around the league, including the New York Islanders' recent hiring of Evan Gold as their new assistant general manager. But speaking on The Sheet podcast, insider Jeff Marek pointed to White as someone he expects to be in the mix for the Detroit opening.
White, Dallas' assistant general manager, has generated real buzz around the league this offseason, having been connected to GM openings with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators, only to come up short in each search.
White has spent roughly two decades building his career within the Stars organization and has been actively pursuing his first opportunity to run an NHL front office this offseason.

His path into hockey management started on the coaching staff at Michigan Tech from 1994 to 1999, before he transitioned into the ECHL as a head coach and eventually moved into front-office work.
He joined the Dallas organization in 2005-06 with what was then the Iowa Stars and stayed with the franchise as it evolved, being named director of hockey operations in 2013-14 before earning a promotion to assistant general manager ahead of the 2016-17 season, a title he's held for nearly a decade.
The string of near-misses this summer has been a tough break for someone who has put in that much time and work within one organization, but those close to the situation reportedly believe White's opportunity is still coming, and Detroit could be exactly where it happens.
