NHL Insider Links Nikita Kucherov to Red Wings

A rift in Tampa Bay could send the Art Ross winner to Detroit, where massive cap space and elite power-play partners offer a perfect fit for the superstar.

Over the weekend, Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov requested a trade from his longtime club.

On Monday, the 33-year-old Russian winger added context to the move, telling media that GM Julien BriseBois told him he was free to walk into free agency. Kucherov said the request came more from feeling that BriseBois displayed "poor communication and respect," with the two sides reportedly having just two conversations about contract talks.

The Detroit Red Wings were then surprisingly roped into the situation by a report from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. On his 32 Thoughts podcast, the NHL insider said an unnamed person of significance believes Kucherov will look at roster fit when choosing his next team, and that Detroit could offer what the three-time Art Ross Trophy winner and two-time Hart Trophy winner is looking for.

Friedman explained that Kucherov's role on the power play could play a significant part in his decision. He would like a one-timer option similar to former teammate Steven Stamkos, which he could find in Lucas Raymond, along with a heavy shot from the point like former teammate Darren Raddysh, which he could get with Moritz Seider.

A move could also make financial sense because if Kucherov reaches free agency, the Red Wings currently have $28.4 million in cap space. With pending moves expected involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson, plus the expected jump in the salary cap, Detroit may be able to give Kucherov a blank check.

Since the start of the 2022-23 season, the longtime Lightning forward has 159 goals and 367 assists for 526 points in 330 games. The only player ahead of him in scoring during that span is Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.

If what Friedman's unnamed source says turns out to be true, Detroit may have an exceptional chance to land one of the league's top players of the last decade. It could fast-track the team's rebuild in an unprecedented manner, without forcing the Red Wings to give up any assets.
