League donations and heartfelt tributes spotlight Michigan’s profound connection to the tragedy, memorializing heroes like Todd Beamer alongside thousands lost during a somber quarter-century milestone for America.
On Friday, the world marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, a day that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and remains one of the most consequential moments in American history. Given the significance of the date, teams across the NHL, along with the league itself, shared tributes honoring those lost.
The Detroit Red Wings posted to social media a photo of Little Caesars Arena with the American flag displayed across the ice, captioned "Remember & Honor." The post drew a range of responses from commenters sharing their own reflections and perspectives on the events of that day.
The NHL also announced it had made donations to four organizations connected to September 11th: the FDNY Foundation, the New York City Police Foundation, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, and 9/11 Day. In a statement, the league said the donations were made "to honor those we lost and assist active and retired first responders and their families."
Among the nearly 3,000 victims were 42 people with ties to Michigan. That list includes 32-year-old Todd M. Beamer, one of the passengers aboard United Flight 93 who helped resist the hijackers, an act widely credited with preventing the plane from reaching its intended target in Washington, D.C.

Ploger III, Laurence Michael Polatsch, Stephen Poulos, David Pruim, Marsha D. Ratchford, Gregory Richards, Joshua A. Rosenthal, Christina Sunga Ryook, Brock J. Safronoff, Lt. Col.
