As Detroit locks up its stars, Simon Edvinsson’s camp eyes a massive payday. Frustrated by stalled negotiations, the Swedish blueliner is demanding a contract reflecting the market's skyrocketing value.
On Thursday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman offered a subtle update on the contract stalemate between the Detroit Red Wings and restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson.
Appearing on the DMase, Vingan & Daunic podcast, Friedman said that "Edvinsson had not changed his mind," indicating the standoff has not yet come to an end.
Detroit's recent extension of star winger Alex DeBrincat, a seven-year, $91 million deal with a $13 million cap hit, shows that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff is willing to spend big money. He will likely need to do so again if he wants to lock up Edvinsson.
The 2021 sixth overall pick has played two full NHL seasons, recording 19 goals and 41 assists for 60 points in 175 games. His camp appears to be looking at the market, and in particular the massive payday for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Zeev Buium.

Buium produced a similar scoring output, with 27 points in 85 games, yet the 20-year-old earned an eight-year, $75.04 million contract with a $9.38 million cap hit. Edvinsson is reportedly seeking a deal along similar lines.
Edvinsson reportedly had an agreed-upon deal earlier in the summer, and that contract and other new deals around the league have left him looking for more.
The Red Wings, meanwhile, have reportedly failed to present the Swedish blueliner with a viable offer since last offseason, which has left him frustrated with how Detroit's management has handled the situation. Horcoff has been vocal that the team's only focus is bringing Edvinsson back and keeping him a Red Wing long-term.
