The Detroit Red Wings would be best served by making an outside hire to fill the spot vacated by Steve Yzerman on Wednesday.
The Detroit Red Wings made a major transition in leadership on Wednesday morning, announcing that Steve Yzerman had stepped down from his role as general manager, a position he'd held since April 2019.

“I’m looking forward to bringing in new leadership to build the championship-caliber organization Hockeytown deserves,” said CEO Chris Ilitch.
While the club also indicated that they would consider internal candidates, they’d be best served making a hire from the outside.
This means that Kris Draper, Yzerman’s longtime teammate and right hand man in management, should not be considered as a serious candidate, as his way of thinking would be too similar and yield similar results.
It’s time for the organization to bring a completely fresh perspective and way of thinking, independent of what was popularly referred to as the “Yzerplan”, to truly help them turn a corner.
While it would be wrong to say there were not several improvements and positives to the Red Wings under Yzerman’s tenure as GM, they’d plateaued.
It also goes without saying that not only did they miss the playoffs all seven years, but also watched several other clubs in their own division lap them.
For the Red Wings to begin moving back into the upper echelon of the NHL, an outside way of thinking is needed.
