On Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings signed 25-year-old goaltender Carter Gylander to a one-year, two-way contract, according to the team.

Gylander emerged as a steady third option in Detroit's goaltending pipeline this past season, with Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava carrying much of the workload in Grand Rapids. Whenever the Griffins needed an extra body in net, Gylander proved reliable, and he figures to take on a similar role heading into next season. 

With Cossa now traded to the Utah Mammoth, the Griffins' crease is expected to be led by highly touted prospect Trey Augustine and breakout goaltender Michal Postava, leaving Gylander once again ticketed for a depth role behind the organization's two clear frontrunners.

Still, his numbers from a season ago make him a name worth watching as he was dominant with a 7-0-2 record, 1.62 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage and one shutout in eight apperances.

The bulk of Gylander's workload continues to come with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye, Detroit's lower-level affiliate. This past season, he went 20-9-5 with a 2.78 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage in 34 regular-season appearances, adding a 6-4 record with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage across 10 Kelly Cup Playoff starts. 

Over two professional seasons with Toledo, Gylander has compiled a 40-18-10 record, a 2.70 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage and four shutouts in 68 games.

Gylander was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the seventh round back in the 2019 NHL Draft but rather than turning pro right away, he spent four seasons at Colgate University. From 2020 to 2024, the Beaumont, Alberta native would go on to post a 46-46-13 record with a 2.69 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage in 106 collegiate appearances. 

Gylander signed his first professional contract with Detroit in March 2024, kicking off a two-year run split between Grand Rapids and Toledo. With Detroit's crease now crowded with promising young talent, Gylander's path to the NHL remains a long one. But after two years of steady results in the lower ranks, the towering six-foot-five netminder leaves himself open as a reliable option as well as a possible trade candidate.
