The announcement was made Friday, with the ceremony set to take place December 19 at MotorCity Casino's Sound Board Theater. Chelios, who joined the Red Wings in a blockbuster trade from the Chicago Blackhawks in 1999, became a fan favorite in Detroit thanks to his grit, longevity, and leadership.
Over ten seasons with the Red Wings, Chelios played in 578 regular season games, tallying 31 goals and 131 assists for 162 points, while also posting a remarkable plus-141 rating during his time with the team. He played a key role in Detroit's Stanley Cups in 2002 and 2008 and was one of the league's most respected veteran presences well into his 40s.
Chelios played 1,651 NHL regular season games, the second-most ever by a defenseman, retired in 2010 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

His playoff resume includes 266 games, the most by any player in NHL history, and three Stanley Cup championships across his time with the Canadiens, Blackhawks, and Red Wings. At age 40, Chelios finished as runner-up for the Norris Trophy while skating in a shutdown role for Detroit.
The 2025 Hall of Fame class Chelios joins includes several other prominent names from Michigan sports history. Among them are former Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace, a cornerstone of the team’s 2004 NBA title run, Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields, Michigan State basketball star and NBA Slam Dunk Champion Jason Richardson, and former Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame already features a long list of Red Wings legends including Steve Yzerman, Alex Delvecchio, and Red Berenson, making Chelios’s inclusion part of a long-standing tradition of hockey greatness in the state.
