Red Wings Could Have Big Trade Coming

Several insiders are discussing a potential trade between the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres

Does Construction or Coaching Ail the Red Wings More?

    Hold on tight.

The Detroit Red Wings are in a tough spot. They are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, alongside the Buffalo Sabres. Both teams have 32 points, eight behind the last Wild Card position.

But that is not the only thing the two clubs have in common.

According to a couple of insiders, the two clubs have ongoing trade discussions.

On Saturday Headlines, Elliotte Friedman reported that the two teams were scouting each other and discussing a potential swap.

"The Red Wings and the Sabres continue to scout each other," Friedman revealed. "I do think those two teams have looked at something there right before the break (roster freeze)."

    "We'll see if that continues."

Additionally, The Fourth Period has reported that several teams have contacted the Sabres about several of their players. Other teams have reportedly discussed Dylan Cozens, Jack Quinn, J.J. Peterka, Bowen Byram, and Owen Power.

    My Take

When a team struggles, it's not uncommon to discuss a trade to shift the dynamics in the locker room or give the team a jolt for them to play better.

However, Steve Yzerman has bought himself a little bit more time by hiring Todd McLellan.

The list of names that have been brought up should catch the attention of Red Wings fans, particularly the two defenders on the list above. Byram and Power are left-shot defenders putting up great offensive numbers this year.

Byram has 20 points in 37 games, while Power has 22. The former averages 23:19 minutes per game, while the latter plays 22:34. Both players are very young: Byram is 23 years old, while Power is 22.

Acquiring either player would be a huge win for the Red Wings. Given their current standings, trading for younger talent than what is currently on the roster would be a wise transaction.

That being said, there is a cost to every move. What kind of player would the Sabres want in return for Byram or Power? Multiple pieces would certainly have to exchange hands to execute a deal of this magnitude.

Cozens would also be an intriguing piece for the Red Wings. He's young, has a lot of talent, and is signed long-term at a reasonable contract number. The young forward has 19 points in 37 games and averages 17:17 in ice time.

For now, Red Wings fans will have to wait to see what happens in the immediate future. With Yzerman's penchant for secrecy, something big could happen at any moment.

    Hold on tight.

Some have stated Byram should not be the guy due to concussions. I myself do not know much about him. I would take a flyer on Cozens. He can for sure rebound. He is young, has size and weight, strong two-way game... fits what the organization wants. However, let state that I would not move Danielson, ASP, Buchelnikov, or Augustine to get him. Is it worth it to move Kasper in a deal? I am not sure. I do think Nate will surpass Kasper. Ideally, if the Wings can move Ras, Copp, and Albert Johansson along with a 2nd or 3rd round pick that would be great.

Yzerman needs to make a move. That is the bottom line. Move on from one of Copp, Compher, Tarasenko, or Rasmussen on the forward-side. On the D-side, waive Eric G (now or before the start of next season) and move from Chiarot and Holl.

How ignorant can some be. Yes, re-sign all of those to a 8 year extension. Instant Stanley Cup. Oh wait... look at where the Wings are at in the standings. I am not sure how ignorant some fans can be... very dense with no common sense.

Cozens can play in any situation. Think Jordan Stoll with much offense.

There could be a lot of competition for Cozens if the Sabres are mindless enough to put him up for trade.

This is not a block buster trade. My blockbuster would involve a trade with Ottawa. I would do whatever it takes to acquire Brady Tkachuk. Bringing BT would give the Wings an identity. It would also make the Wings more of a "physical" team. Put the "C" on him and he immediately changes the chemistry on the team. The Wings need to move Larkin. Larkin is a good second line center. He doesn't possess the leadership skills.

A trade is necessary to shake up the chemistry on the team! I trust Yzerman to think it out before he pulls the trigger. I want young pieces in the trade.

Who would you like to see the Red Wings acquire from the Buffalo Sabres?

No one. They are worst than the Wings. I hope Y doesn't go crazy with trades. Fastest way to destroy a team is with bad trades and Yzerman's track record isn't good when it comes to trades. Bad trades killed us for years back in the 70's.

Byram or Power are attractive gets but I don't see how they get them without giving up a lot. No one wants Holl, Copp or Ras or Veleno so let's stop thinking they could be a key part of any deal for value. If you do not want to give up Cat (only a part), Edvinsson, Raymond, ASP or options like that you are just fan baiting. Power was a 1OA they would want someone like ASP or maybe Edvinsson for him. Don't like that? Don't wish for a trade. The idea you trade Copp, Wallinder, Cat and Ras for a good young NHL center and D is delusional.

TAV They need to make moves regardless. Yzerman needs to move on from Copp, Tarasenko, Eric G, Chiarot and Holl. Some of those moves will be waiving at some point (i.e. Eric G); others may need to be a buyout at the end of the season (i.e. Copp), others at the TDL (i.e. try moving Chiarot with retained salary to a PO team at the TDL). Something needs to be done.

Byram would be the only player I would be interested in. I wouldn't give up a lot.

OK! Hold on to your hats!!!

Byram, Power, Couzins + 5th rounder in 2026 to Detroit.

Berggren, Rasmussen, Copp, Johansson, Chariot (we keep 1/2 salary) + a 3rd rounder in 2025 to Buffalo.

Berggren and Johansson are our high roster guys. Chariot gives them their fill-in D man.

Byram and Power are great young players with potential. Couzins will mature.

    DO SOMETHING!

Do you think Buffalo would agree to your scenario? In reality, Detroit would have to give up Seider, Raymond and a first round pick to acquire these players from Buffalo.

gcheswick So you believe the Sabres would give up Byram, Power and Couzins for basically the Wing's second and third line players. It would be robbery!! I would love it!

The Wings can't trade their way out of this mess. Trading could only get them deeper in the hole and Y's deals have basically sucked so far. No reason to believe he could pull a McDavid out of a hat. Keep the good players and prospects and try and deal the rest.

Cozens is mature and brings a complete game now. Not a chance the Sabres trade him for second and third liners.
