A new survey published by The Athletic arrived at a conclusion already familiar to Red Wings fans: that Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond make up the NHL's best broadcasting duo.
The survey ranked the league's local broadcast by creating a local ranking and a national ranking and averaging the two ratings, to balance the feelings of die-hard supporters of the team the broadcast serves with the reactions of more neutral adjudicators. Daniels and Redmond took the top spot in both rankings.
The Athletic had this to say of the pair:
"Both Daniels and Redmond are institutions at this point. One thing that tends to separate Red Wings broadcasts, beyond the usual attributes of all good hockey broadcasters (precision, memorable turns of phrase, great chemistry) is their focus on the opposing team and really selling the game, even beyond the accomplishments of Red Wings players.
"'They are obviously rooting for the Wings as a local broadcast, but I really appreciate that you can tell they are just fans of the game itself, too, and will not shy away from talking up opposing teams/players,' noted one Red Wings fan."
Last season, Daniels' call of Patrick Kane's overtime goal in his return to face the Blackhawks in the United Center—"It's Patrick Kane in Chicagooooo"—was nearly as memorable as Kane's goal itself.
Meanwhile, Redmond's avuncular energy and penchant for adding a flannel to his suit for pre- and post-game coverage only makes him more beloved as he ages.
It's certainly no surprise to Red Wing fans that Daniels and Redmond earned this distinction, but somehow they took second place to the Seattle broadcast in last year's iteration of this survey, so consider this the reascension of the proper kings to this particular crown.
