Columbus secures a reliable two-way veteran with a long-term extension, forcing Detroit to pivot their offseason strategy after missing out on a premier middle-six depth solution.

Another intriguing name comes off the board Tuesday as center Charlie Coyle signs a six-year extension carrying a cap hit of $6 million per season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, removing one of the most appealing options available to teams looking to add depth down the middle this summer.

For the Detroit Red Wings, the news stings as they entered the offseason with intentions of spending money to upgrade their lineup, and Coyle had appeared to be one of the better fits available for their middle-six forward group.

At 34 years old, the Weymouth, Massachusetts native is coming off a season in which he recorded 20 goals and 38 assists for 58 points, just two shy of his second 60-point campaign in the last three seasons. That kind of consistent offensive production paired with reliable two-way play made him exactly the type of player Detroit was searching for.

During the 2022-23 season with the Boston Bruins, Coyle posted a plus-29 rating, a mark that tied for ninth-best in the entire NHL that year, showcasing his elite two-way play. That combination of offensive output and defensive responsibility is not easy to find on the open market, which is precisely what made him such an attractive target for teams like the Red Wings in the first place.

With Coyle now committed to Columbus, Detroit will need to pivot and identify alternative targets at center heading into what is shaping up to be a critical offseason for the franchise.
