The latest episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast, The Silky Mitten State
Episode 17 of The Silky Mitten State is live!
On today's episode, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discuss another trying week of Red Wings hockey, before touching on some national NHL storylines coming out of the trade deadline and the NCAA Tournament picture for Michigan's various college hockey programs.
We open the show by talking about the totalized nature of Detroit's present struggles. It doesn't feel as though one aspect of their game is in disarray; instead, it seems like everything (attack, defense, special teams, goaltending) is off kilter, and each area of concern only perpetuates the others. For a sample of that portion of today's show, check out this clip:
From there, we touch on the lone bright spot during this skid, namely Lucas Raymond, who has shown his desire to push out of this lsing streak in a variety of ways. After that, we pivot into debriefing Detroit's quiet trade deadline, considering whether the last week's struggles invite any sort of "Monday morning quarterback"-style re-evaluation of the Red Wings' passive approach.
We also discuss some of the larger storylines from around the league to emerge from the deadline, including Vegas' cap chicanery, the Avalanche loading up with more talent, Buffalo setting itself up nicely for the future, and the Hurricanes addressing an area of need.
We close the show by discussing the current NCAA Tournament picture for Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Michigan Tech, and Lake Superior State. As we head into crunch time, there is a legitimate chance of four Michigan schools qualifying.
