Trey Augustine dominates college hockey, earning top conference honors. His stellar play cements his status as a premier Red Wings goaltending prospect.

The Detroit Red Wings continue to build one of the more promising prospect pipelines in hockey, and few names are generating more excitement than goaltender Trey Augustine. The 21-year-old netminder has been dominant at the collegiate level with the Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey, putting together what many consider a near-flawless run since arriving in the NCAA.

On Wednesday, Augustine’s standout play was recognized as he was named the 2026 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Year. He was also named to the Big Ten All Conference First Team with the honors adding to an already impressive résumé for the 21-year-old from South Lyon.

Over three seasons with Michigan State, Augustine has compiled a 65-24-7 record, along with a 2.39 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage across 97 appearances. His consistency and composure have made him one of the most reliable goaltenders in college hockey.

This season, Augustine has taken his performance to another level. In 32 appearances, he has posted a 23-8-1 record with a 2.09 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, further cementing his status as one of the top goaltending prospects in the game.

Beyond the NCAA, Augustine has also excelled on the international stage. Representing United States men's national junior ice hockey team, he helped capture two gold medals at the World Juniors.

He also gained valuable experience at the IIHF World Championship level, where he held his own against NHL-caliber competition, recording a 2-2-0 record with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

Within the Red Wings’ system, fellow goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa is widely expected to make the jump to the NHL next season. However, Augustine’s rapid development gives Detroit another strong option in net.
