Detroit’s future stars hit the jackpot as Trey Augustine and Carter Bear unearthed rare, high-value autographed collectibles during Upper Deck’s exclusive pack-ripping session at the Rookie Showcase.
This past weekend, some of hockey's brightest young stars gathered for the NHLPA Rookie Showcase, presented by Upper Deck, giving fans an early look at the league's next generation of talent.
The annual event brought together many of the NHL's top prospects for a weekend of content creation, media appearances, and fan engagement, allowing players to showcase more of their personalities while creating digital content for the league and its partners. Representing the Detroit Red Wings were 2025 first-round pick Carter Bear and goalie prospect Trey Augustine.
One of the biggest highlights of the weekend came during Upper Deck's popular pack-ripping session, where players had the opportunity to open a variety of the company's newest hockey products. With the sports card hobby continuing to grow in popularity, the segment quickly became one of the most entertaining moments of the showcase.
Augustine walked away with arguably one of the biggest pulls of the event after uncovering a 2025-26 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Orange Autographed Matthew Schaefer rookie card, numbered to just 25 prints. The highly coveted card is one of the most rare for one of hockey's most exciting young defensemen.

Early sales of some versions of the card have gone for as high as nearly $8,000, making Augustine's pull a significant one. While the Detroit netminder is already set to begin his three-year entry-level contract carrying a $1.075 million annual cap hit next season, the valuable card could provide an impressive bonus should he ever decide to sell it.
Bear also enjoyed a successful pack break, pulling a 2025-26 Upper Deck SP Authentic Future Watch Autographed card of fellow Red Wings prospect Emmitt Finnie. Numbered to 599, the card currently carries an estimated value of just under $100, though its long-term value could rise considerably if Finnie continues his development and establishes himself as an NHL regular.
The NHLPA Rookie Showcase continues to be one of the league's premier offseason events, giving fans a chance to connect with hockey's future stars while offering prospects a unique opportunity to build their brands.
