Detroit calls up 2021 first round draft pick Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions amidst a glut of goaltending injuries

Monday morning, the Detroit Red Wings announced the call-up of their top goaltending prospect, 2021 first round draft pick Sebastian Cossa.  The recall comes under emergency conditions, with goaltenders Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon on the shelf due to injury.

Cossa has played 14 games this season, all with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.  In those games, he has a 9-4-1 record with a .925 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average.  It's not yet clear whether Detroit foresees him starting NHL games right now or whether he will simply serve as a back-up to Ville Husso (recalled following the injury to Lyon last week).

What we do know is that, after announcing Cossa's call-up, the Red Wings placed Lyon on injured reserve to November 27th.  IR means a player must sit out a minimum of seven days, which is to say that Lyon would be eligible to return for Thursday's game in Ottawa against the Senators, but Detroit has already said Lyon will not travel on the forthcoming two-game road trip, so the soonest we are likely to see him again is Saturday at home against the Colorado Avalanche.

Husso made 15 saves on 18 shots in relief of Talbot Sunday.  He is likely to start Tuesday's game in Boston over Cossa, but after this afternoon's practice, coach Derek Lalonde will offer more clarity on the state of his goaltending room, from scheduled starters to the timeline for both Talbot and Lyon's return to health.
