The franchise’s first "Hockeytown" branded sweater has fallen flat with a fanbase craving the bold, creative reinventions seen elsewhere around the league.
On Monday, the Detroit Red Wings released their new Hometown Remix jerseys, and for the first time in franchise history, "Hockeytown" is prominently featured on the front of a Detroit sweater.
The design matches a jersey leak that surfaced on social media last week, when fans got an early look at the sweater. Most of the NHL's Hometown Remix jerseys leaked at the same time, and on Monday the leaks were proven accurate.
When the leaks first came out, Detroit fans were quick to voice their displeasure. Many said the jersey looks like a fairly routine Red Wings design, with the Winged Wheel moved lower on the front, beneath the word "Hockeytown" in large lettering.

Beyond that, the rest of the jersey isn't overly different from the team's standard look. Meanwhile, teams like the Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins, among others around the league, are getting completely new colorways and looks compared to their standard jerseys.
Some fans criticized the Red Wings design harshly, saying it felt like a lack of effort went into it, especially while other markets received radical new looks and exciting throwbacks. Fans also noted that the Red Wings hit a home run with their Centennial celebration jerseys last season, with some saying they would have preferred to see those remain instead of the new Hometown Remix sweaters.
Time will tell how the jersey looks in game action, which could persuade some fans to change their minds. For now, though, the consensus and responses from fans appears to be that it is more of a miss than the home run the Centennial celebration jerseys were just a season ago.
